Baby Car Seat Buying Guide

Buying the best quality car seat you can afford is a critical investment in ensuring your baby’s safety as well as his physical development (the Jane Strata comes with a full lie-down option – optimal for spinal and neck development in the infant stage).  All car seats we have recommended are Group 0+, meaning they are suitable up to 13kg and are rear facing as required by law – you will continue to use this car seat until baby’s head pokes over the back or until he or she reaches the weight limit. In the infant stage, it is important to choose a relatively lightweight model that you can get in and out of your car easily and can use with your pushchair to create a travel system.

This is one area in which you never want to use second hand as it is critical your car seat meets the latest European safety standards – in addition, you may not be able to see any damage that has occurred to the seat in its pre-existing use. It is an excellent idea to visit the manufacturer’s website where you can check if the car seat you are looking at has been crash tested with a vehicle the same model as yours.

Maxi Cosi car seats are the most widely known on the market – they work with the vast majority of pushchairs and prams as travel systems which makes them a great choice as does the fact that they consistently come in near the top of safety rankings and consumer product review rankings. Less well known, but really fantastic car seats inclue the  Jane Matrix Light 2 which uniquely enables baby to travel in complete lie-flat position in the car and the super safe Besafe Izi Combi Isofix car seat from Norwegian brand BeSafe.

Isofix Base

ISOFIX is an international standardized fitting system, which provides the safest, easiest and quickest way to install a child car seat correctly without the need of vehicle seat belts. The name ISOFIX stands for ISO (International Standardization Organization) plus FIX (Fixation). ISOFIX car seats make use of two standard attachment points located at the base of the seat, plus an anti-tipping forward device: either a support leg or top tether. ISOFIX car seats ensure the risk of incorrect installation in your car is extremely small, offering the best safety options for children and ease of use for parents. ISOFIX bases guarantee a solid and permanent connection between the car seat and the car chassis – meaning any force of impact is more controlled, and less force is applied on the child. The ISOFIX support leg or top tether anti-tipping devices also create increased stability and safety.

Car Seat Accessories

Simple toys should keep baby entertained when young, but you will likely have to get some DVDs or CDs as they grow older if you spend a great deal of time travelling with your child in the car.
