Seidenkleidung offers no benefits for kids with dermatitis, results of clinical studies
The use of satin clothes offers no added value for infants suffering from mild to severe dermatitis, according to a research conducted by the University of Nottingham. Results of the PLOS Medicine research sponsored by the National Institute for Health Research showed that the use of specialized apparel did not decrease the seriousness of dermatitis for participating infants, nor reduced the amount of cream and ointment used for their dermatitis, nor the number of cases of itching.
In three small studies it was shown that the use of DermaSilk clothes for the treatment of dermatitis could provide some potential advantages for the treatment of infants with dermatitis. It is an itching, inflamed disease of the epidermis that is spread all over the globe. Clothes are believed to be involved in either alleviating or aggravating signs of sweet itch, and special clothes are now available in the UK on recipe in a wide range of shapes (including silk).
At the same test, the use of apparel was examined to determine whether the use of apparel made of satin was economical. At random, the infants received either a regular course of therapy for dermatitis or a regular course of therapy plus the use of soft tissue attire. Entrants received either Dermasilk or Dreamskin clothes - the two garment brand names available on recipe at the design stage of the study.
Each brand is made from 100% sericine-free 100% anti-microbial knit fabricilk. Entrants received three kits of long-sleeved vests and trousers (or wetsuits and trousers according to the ages of the child) and were told to dress as often as possible around the clock. However, all infants continue their routine use of plasticizer cream and topically active anti-inflammatory steroids and were asked not to alter their default treatments for the study if possible.
Every two month the caregivers evaluated the participants' skins using the EASI (Eczema Area and Severity Index), which assesses how severe the dermatitis is (e.g. how reddened and infected the skins look, signs of scratching and oedema in the skin). Our nursing staff were instructed in the safe conduct of evaluations and did not know to which group the child was assigned.
Besides the EASI primary result measure, the study also examined dermatitis signs, the use of topically applied correticosteroid lotions and salves, QoL, and the number of dermal infection and referrals. The study found no differences between the two groups with regard to the seriousness of the dermatitis, the patient's standard of living and the use of anti-cancer drugs.
Similarly, the number of cases of dermatitis and hospital stays due to dermatitis were similar in both groups. Asked to supervise the degree of seriousness of their dermatitis symptom on a regular basis, those who used the velvet garments report small improvement in dermatitis, but these variations were small and unlikely to be clinically significant.
£840.272 was issued per year for recipes for satin dresses in the UK at the date the order was placed, and over £2 million by 2014. Apparel survey found that the mean costs of clothing for 6 month were £318. All in all, the survey came to the conclusion that the use of soft clothing for the treatment of dermatitis is uneconomical for the NHS.
